Monthly Pinspiration // September Pins

September seriously felt like it whizzed by with us buried under a never-ending pile of work. Like August, we didn’t really have the time to relax on Pinterest as much as we loved to. Sigh!

Out of the 30+ pins we pinned on our boards in September, here are our absolute favourites! We hope you will be as inspired by them as we are ūüôā

Min: Lisa Madigan’s series of¬†oil paintings on wood are beautiful studies of luscious paints and soft soothing colours. It’s time to roll up our sleeves and get busy in our studio with oil paints!¬†

Min: Simple, classy, and understated chic. This Vania Romoff gown ticks off all three boxes! Pinning this brings me one step closer to actually getting down to do my wedding planning for next year.

Sunday Stickies // 27 September 2015

Sunday Stickies is a column where we reflect on the past week and pen those thoughts down on sticky pads. Expect notes to ourselves and others, advice, reminders for the week ahead, quotes, and anything random actually.

It has been one s-l-o-w week in terms of output and productivity at honey&gazelle design studio.

We are still stuck with some designs that just aren’t coming out right (in our eyes). Lots of retooling and reworking needs to be done next week before we are ready to start production!

Here’s to a better October in terms of health and productivity yes?

Min:¬†This week is all about reflections and making changes. I feel that I am quite open to the idea of change but in reality, I take a long time to settle in and I need a lot of convincing that I have made the right decision. It’s been some time since my family dog left us for doggy heaven and while I really want a new dog (not to replace him but to have the company of a furry friend), my parents have expressed that they can’t deal with another heartbreak and ache. I guess we will have to deal with this as a family!

Another change that I’m seriously anticipating is my body! Asides from healthy challenges that Jia and I occasionally partake in, I have also signed myself up for one year of gym classes, to you know, tone up? I had my first spinning class yesterday and boy, my head’s still spinning from all that cycling. Side note to my dear friend:¬†Hats off to you, Est! You’re amazing!

Jia: I have been sick for the entire week, struggling to recover from my¬†asthma attacks and coughing fits in the midst of terrible terrible haze. I didn’t do much as the doctor’s orders were simply “REST!”. So yeah, that is my week summed up in one sad sticky against my bedroom wall.

Tell us about your week below! We’d love to hear from you ūüôā

Love, Min+Jia.

Photoshop Basics Tutorial // Introduction to Layers

Photoshop Basics Tutorial // Introduction to Layers

honeyandgazelle-photoshop-tutorial-introduction-to-layers-header

Time for another lesson in the Photoshop Basics series! If you are very new to Adobe Photoshop, you may not understand the function of layers.

What are layers, and why do we need to use layers?

Layers are the most important function of Photoshop. They are the building blocks to your work. You can add, delete, name, rename, move, adjust, mask, show, hide, blend, merge, lock, unlock, group, ungroup, and add cool effects or change the opacity of layers. If that long sentence just gave you a “huh?” expression on your face, don’t worry! Layers are not complicated to understand and master.

The easiest way to understand layers is by first doing something in Photoshop without layers. So let’s get started.

Step 1: Open a new document.

Go to File > New. A dialog box will pop up. You can enter any width or height or resolution. The Background Contents option should be set to white. I am just using my last-applied settings (that was for editing some pictures for Instagram). Click Ok.

Free Downloads #7 // Printable Reminder Cards – New Shade!

Yay, we heard you! Our first foray into reminder cards received an overwhelming number of downloads. We guess many of you are like us Рoccasionally scatterbrained Рand need a visual reminder to get our urgent but seriously mundane tasks done.

We have created a new shade for you called Berry Rhapsody in case you might want to switch things up a little ūüôā¬†If you are new to reminder cards, check out our first post on it here¬†to download the first version!

Reminder cards are designed to be bright and compact. To use them, simply stash the cards in places you will definitely notice. Popular hidey-holes for the cards: the clear slots of wallets/card cases, between pages of planners/books/kindle, in the key compartments of bags, or the slots in book-styled mobile phone cases.

Sunday Stickies // 20 September 2015

Sunday Stickies is a column where we reflect on the past week and pen those thoughts down on sticky pads. Expect notes to ourselves and others, advice, reminders for the week ahead, quotes, and anything random actually.

Yikes, September is on its way out and the end of the year is coming. We have been rushing to catch up with tons of work all week but the weather is slowing us down.

In more positive news, look out for more¬†Colour-It-Yourself and Wordsearch postcards! We are super thrilled with the positive response to our various postcard concepts and have been working on new ideas for the past few weeks. Asides from postcards, we are also designing and testing our products frantically for Christmas and the end of the year. More information will be released in October ūüôā Very exciting!

It seems that love is in the air, as we have also been busying ourselves with commissioned wedding invitations. Congrats to all the lovebirds getting hitched in 2016! -throws confetti-

So much work, so little time!

Min:¬†It has been a rather meh and slow work week for me. I haven’t been very productive at work so I now have quite a bit of stuff stacked up on my “in” pile. Ahhh, someone save me please! It really doesn’t help that I’m currently hooked on Pocket Mine, and I’ll be smashing rocks whenever I get some free time at work.

Oh! And I finally had the chance to watch the Singapore Grand Prix and… it was a neck aching/breaking experience for sure. After all that race adrenaline¬†(or beer high), we caught Pharrell Williams live! Whoop whoop! Really love his giraffe tee and jeans outfit.

Jia: One of those weeks where it felt like time just went by in a blink of an eye, however¬†when you really think about it, there were moments within the week where time seemed to have lingered and stood still. The moments that stood out were my boyfriend’s birthday (yay!) and me feeling sick on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday (boo!).

I am ending the week on a very exciting and fist-pumping note though – Bon Jovi’s concert at the Singapore Grand Prix is going to start in 10 hours! I am spending the rest of my Sunday (albeit sick) at the race with good music – The Sam Willows and Bon Jovi – and my favourite partner-in-crime ‚̧ I looooooooove Bon Jovi and I cannot.wait.to.see.them.live. Like I have told my boyfriend – I’ll be there for you always on a bed of roses. You can be my friend if you know how many songs were in that sentence!

Tell us – how was YOUR week?

Love, Min+Jia.

Eat // Simple and Healthy Pot Noodles

Food is a huge part of my life and I spend a lot of time dreaming and thinking of it.

I am a compulsive snacker – chips and gummy bears are my absolute favourite snacks to munch on – and¬†I always have an extra bag of snacks stashed somewhere.¬†When I’m not snacking, I¬†am¬†dreaming of¬†my next meal. There are days when I’ll indulge in huge portions¬†of fried chicken, fries, burgers, or instant ramen. Oh, that sinful but so damn satisfying taste rolling all around on your tongue. Mmmm!

Unfortunately, one cannot live on junk food alone.¬†So after all that¬†sinful indulgence, I tend to partake in some form of¬†juice cleanse or detox. The most recent detox (sort of) I did was the¬†‘Vegetarian Lunch August’ with Jia. By the start of the second week of August, I was already running out of ideas for lunch. Being vegetarian was much tougher than anticipated. Right at that moment,¬†I chanced upon The Londoner’s¬†travelling¬†noodles¬†via Pinterest and woah! What a brilliant idea! Where exactly have I been all this while?! Totally living under a rock.

This Pot Noodle recipe is¬†really easy to put together and it’s my favourite lunch recipe for sure! Just be sure to load up on fresh vegetables for a healthier lunch option (frozen veggies are fine too). Read on for some tips to make the perfect pot noodles!

Curate // Cool Laptop Sleeves from Society6

Curate // Cool Laptop Sleeves from Society6

I don’t use laptop sleeves to protect my laptop. Say what? Ahem, yes. I do not use laptop sleeves to protect laptops. I don’t even own a laptop because I have been a desktop girl my whole life.

With that being said, I do love good laptop sleeves! I use them as a cushioned file for transporting stuff. I’m one of those picky people who dislike having their papers crumbled or their book covers bent. Normal plastic files can bend easily in slouchy bags which totally defeats the purpose of keeping your papers in a file. I don’t even remember when I started using laptop sleeves as files (probably in Uni?) but it is now my main system for transporting honey&gazelle’s art prints to and fro from the printers.

The laptop sleeve I have been using is getting pretty beaten up, thus I have been on the lookout for a replacement. Society6 has tons of amazing artwork that are reproduced onto laptop sleeves and I am getting close to picking up a couple of them. Here are the laptop sleeves on my wish list !

1 //¬†The Fox and the Forest –¬†Love the focus and colour pop of the fox in the midst of a gloomy forest. This laptop sleeve reminds me of a fairytale.

2 // Magical Wood РVery fun and cool with so much to look at! I love the colours and the randomness of the elements.

3 // Papa Don’t Peach¬†–¬†Since I have the mobile phone case of this, I was thinking of owning the laptop sleeve version to expand my collection!

4 // I<3you¬†–¬†Awww, the kitty is too cute and kind of reminds me of Boba. This speaks to the crazy cat lady in me. Meow.

Sunday Stickies // 13 September 2015 + Behind The Scenes!

Sunday Stickies is a column where we reflect on the past week and pen those thoughts down on sticky pads. Expect notes to ourselves and others, advice, reminders for the week ahead, quotes, and anything random actually.

This Sunday Stickies post is a little different from usual. We are preparing and publishing it together for the first time! We usually write our own stickies and bits of the Sunday Stickies posts separately.

This weekend, we are having a little fake retreat that is basically a quarterly review of our business. We are hidden away in a small hotel room that kind of looks like a dorm room and have been having meetings all day all night. However, we took a break to prepare for this post and thought it would be fun to show you what goes behind the scenes of a stickies post. ūüôā

honey&gazelle // Colour-It-Yourself Greeting Postcards

honey&gazelle // Colour-It-Yourself Greeting Postcards

Colouring was one of our favourite activities when we were kids. Judging by the red hot surge¬†of adult colouring books these days, we are guessing that we aren’t the only ones feeling nostalgic and eager to whip out our colouring pencils.

honey&gazelle design studio decided to jump in on the colouring fun, but of course, with our own twist on it. We designed colouring greeting postcards, specifically aimed at creative souls who love personalising their greeting cards. Everyone has their own colouring style and thus, no two greeting postcards would ever look the same!

In a day and age whereby receiving snail mail is a rare occurrence, we think that your loved ones would be especially touched by the sincerity and effort that goes into the colouring, writing, and posting ‚̧ Let’s make someone smile today, yes?

The CIY Greeting Postcard Set contains four postcards: Happy Birthday; Thank You; Best Wishes; and Hello Sunshine.

Hot Hue // Soft Dusty Greys

Hot Hue // Soft Dusty Greys

Like the colour white, I never really used to appreciate greys when I was growing up.

I think my first bout of love for the colour struck when I was in design school. I remember using my favourite shades of soft grey copic markers to colour the skin tones and add depth to the drapes of my fashion illustrations. Why didn’t I use nude beigey shades for the skin tone? I did sometimes, but I always preferred grey as it goes fantastically well with all colours.

“For a painter, grey is the richest colour. The one that makes all the others speak.” said Paul Klee, a Swiss-German painter. Helen van Wky was also a fan of the colour,¬†“Grey is the queen of all colours, because she makes everyone else look good”.

Over the years, grey has steadily climbed up the ranks and is now one of my ultimate favourite colours. I love all shades of them – there are more than 50 shades of grey – but always have a soft spot for the very soft greys and the really smokey greys.

Here are some of my current obsessions that boast of shades of the former!

1 // Vintage Samsonite Streamlite Train Makeup Case¬†– Swoon, this is from the 1950s and it looks like it is in great condition. I’m a makeup junkie and this is a dream travel case!

2 //¬†Rainy Day Lambswool Throw Blanket – Super pretty and cosy, it is the perfect snuggle blanket. ‚̧

3 // Robin Cushion РThis cushion is so cute! I love that the robin looks very peaceful and it soothingly puts me into an autumn/winter mood immediately.

4 //¬†Moleskine Soft Coloured Notebook – Ahhhh, good ol’ Moleskine. Even though I am probably hoarding close to a hundred notebooks right now… this shade is so pretty and Moleskines are always a good idea right?
